Asia-Pacific and a new international order: responses and options.

Abstract

For two days in January 2005, leading analysts from across Australia and the Asia-Pacific came together to discuss the security challenges faced by nations in the region. Their brief was to examine the responses regional governments had already made in light of the current security environment, as well as the options they had available to them into the future. Although the term Asia-Pacific includes a range of nations in and on the Pacific rim, including some Latin American countries, for the Symposium we limited our scope by focusing on countries of Northeast, Southeast and South Asia, plus the two former superpowers and added the Middle East due to its centrality in the current regional security environment and its strategic importance. This report explores how Asia -Pacific nations have responded to the changing regional security environments as well as the options available to them into the future. © 2005 Australian Institute of International Affairs.
