Abstract: This paper describes a geostatistical approach to the calculation of a wireline property index from a set of geophysical wireline logging measurements taken along a borehole. The purpose of a wireline property index is to estimate the variability of an underlying, unknown physical rock property, such as porosity, from several geophysical variables that are correlated with the rock property but where the degree of correlation is unknown. The wireline property index exploits the fact that the behaviour of the geophysical variables is, largely an effect of the common underlying rock property. The method described here takes into account the different scales of variability and correlation among the variables.
