Abstract: | The article informs that the author had the privilege of meeting Mary Jackson, a Nursing Standard Nurse of the Year Award winner at the Labour Party conference this year. She had created a drop-in centre and, through her activities, had reduced the teenage pregnancy rate in the area. Jackson had achieved a lot more besides--better health and sexual health education, a good rapport with young people and a gradual building of their self-esteem. Jackson's description of her work with young people was based on her non-judgemental attitude towards them, her availability--the drop-in centre was part of the local Internet café--and her desire to help them take more control of their lives by providing them with information and support when they needed it.
