Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to empirically examine the effect of international expansion on the business AND family systems. Because significant changes were often required to grow globally, this study found that internationalisation was often a trigger for conflict within the family. Findings suggest that successful internationalisation of family firms requires the ability to develop ‘institutional capital’; the ability to generate broad support within the family unit for reconfiguring and deploying the firm’s resources towards internationalisation. The implications of this study’s findings for family firms, policy and future research are explored in the full paper.
